The Fight Against Cancer Hits the Road
RMV, Sen. Travaglini to Unveil License Plate at State House Press Conference

NEWTON, Mass. (August 17, 2006)—The Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) and the Conquer Cancer Coalition of Massachusetts have announced that they will officially unveil the state’s newest specialty license plate—the “Conquer Cancer” plate—in a press conference on Monday, August 21, 2006, at 11:00 a.m., on the State House Grand Staircase.

Massachusetts Senate President Robert E. Travaglini, who purchased a Conquer Cancer license plate, will speak at the press conference.

“Today the drivers of Massachusetts can show their hope of eradicating this awful disease by purchasing one of the Conquer Cancer license plates,” said Registrar of Motor Vehicles Anne L. Collins.

Susan Zuker, of Newton, began a grassroots campaign for the plate after her husband, Michael, died of lung cancer in January 2004. Since that time, Zuker and her two sons have founded the Conquer Cancer Coalition and spent countless hours canvassing the state to collect the 1,500 applications required by the RMV to produce a special license plate.

“Thousands of people across this state have joined this effort. What I have learned in this journey is that none of us are alone in the fight against cancer. I believe that together we all can make a difference,” Zuker said.

Revenue from license plate sales will benefit the Conquer Cancer Coalition, which is composed of four local, nonprofit cancer organizations working in various ways to fight all forms of cancer: The Wellness Community of Greater Boston, The Kenneth B. Schwartz Center, The New England Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, and Cancer Prevention Research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Channing Laboratory.

In addition, the Coalition will share a portion of its proceeds through an annual grant to be awarded to eligible Massachusetts-based cancer organizations.

Conquer Cancer license plates are now available through the RMV’s website (www.mass.gov/rmv/express/plates.htm) or at any of the 35 RMV branches across the state.

The mission of the Conquer Cancer Coalition of Massachusetts is to provide a continuous source of funding for local nonprofit cancer organizations through sales of a specialty license plate.  The Coalition member organizations encompass a wide range of cancer-related services, including education and support, compassionate care training, prevention research and awareness, and survivor advocacy.  For more information visit www.conquercancer.org or call 617-796-9191.
