Susan's Story
Susan Zuker is the motivating force behind the Conquer Cancer Coalition and the license plate campaign. Born and raised in Boston, Susan was married to her husband, Michael, for 31 years when he died of lung cancer in January 2004. Rather than submitting to her grief, Susan found strength in the possibility of reaching out to other cancer victims to ensure they receive the most advanced and compassionate care available, with the ultimate goal of someday wiping out the disease entirely.
Through cold-calling and an exhaustive donation of her personal time, energy, and capital, she and her two sons initiated and maintained a stunning grassroots campaign to raise awareness and put the Conquer Cancer license plate on the road. The support and positive response she has received from thousands of people across Massachusetts has given her strength to continue her efforts as she and the members of the Coalition work together to conquer cancer.
In recognition of Susan’s determination and strength, State Farm Insurance awarded her their national “Embrace Life” award in 2005. The award is given annually to five women who have chosen to make a difference in the wake of a spouse’s death.
